Worcester Music and Dance Festival: A festival of sounds and food
On February 27, staff, clients, and community members were treated to an afternoon of live performances, culture, and delicious food. The event organized by Diversity Committee lead by Wanja Kiraguri was a festival of the senses. Performers showcasing the Irish culture included Mulligan’s Fancy and Irish step dancers. The audience was then treated to African music and dance by Irene Kiarie who had even the most reluctant dancers on their feet. The afternoon finale featured several Latin American performers including dancers from Ritmos Academy, and poetry and song from Maria Flores and Lucelia de Jesus.
Bridge staff baked and cooked the most amazing food representing Irish, African, and Latin American cultures. The audience feasted on Irish bread and stew; Pilau rice, samosas, mandazi, jollof rice, and spiced tea from Africa; and parrilladas and Spanish rice.
The Bridge would like to thank all the donors including: Pastor Dan Condon who hosted the event at the First Assembly of God Church, Kris Daly, Ben Mbugua, Mulligan’s Fancy, Lucelia de Jesus, and Maria Florez. The program was supported in part by a grant from the Worcester Cultural Commission, a local agency which is supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Commission, a state agency.
